1. Is the Propane Training Academy an accredited school?

No, the Propane Training Academy is a continuing education and professional training provider specializing in propane training and education for the construction industry. While the Propane Training Academy does not offer degrees, we do send course completion information to association partners.

2. What does it cost to become a member of the Propane Training Academy?

Membership, courses and exams are 100% free. We will never bill you for using our services.

3. How do I register to become a member?

To register as a member, click on the Login link at the top right of the page. At the bottom of the login window, click the "Register Now!" link and complete the registration form. All fields marked with a red asterisk () are required. Your email address will be used as your Username.

4. Why do I need to register and what will you do with my information?

The Propane Education & Research Council may use your personal information to process your requests, or to send you information or material for which you have subscribed or which we think you will enjoy. We also use the information to assess and improve our services. For more details, please see our privacy policy. If you are an AIA member, please be sure to enter your member number into your profile. If you don’t we will not be able to report credits on your behalf.

What if I am not an AIA member? What if I am not a member of any professional organization?

Anyone can take a Propane Training Academy course. Users who are not members of any certifying organization, or the member of an organization not listed as an option during registration, can still print a certificate of completion for their records to verify credits earned.

5. How do I update the information in my profile?

First, log in to the Propane Training Academy. Once logged in, your name will appear in the top right part of the page. Next to it will be a gear icon. Click on the icon to view the Update Profile / Change Password form. You may modify any details of your account profile. Click the “Update Profile” button at the bottom of the page to save your entries.

6. How do I change my password? What if I’ve forgotten my password?

First, log in to the Propane Training Academy. Once logged in, your name will appear in the top right part of the page. Next to it will be a gear icon. Click on the icon to view the Update Profile / Change Password form. About half way down the form, you will see the option to update your password. Enter your new password and click the “Update Profile” button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

If you have forgotten your password, click the “Forgot Password” link at the bottom of the login window. Follow the given instructions to create a new password. back to top

7. How do I browse course listings?

The navigation bar across the top of the screen allows you to browse our courses in 4 different ways.

All Courses - you can browse all course listings offered on the Propane Training Academy.

Professions - you can browse training programs based on your profession. We’ve identified the continuing education courses most suitable for architects, builders, concrete contractors, interior designers, lighting designers and masonry contractors.

Subjects - browse education and training based on the course’s subject matter.

Certifications - courses are also grouped by the national associations which have approved the continuing education programs that fulfill their membership or certification requirements. You can browse courses approved by the AIA, NAHB, NARI, and the USGBC

8. How do I launch a course?

First, log in to the Propane Training Academy. When you've found a course you wish to take, you may click on the “Learn more” button to view further details of a particular course, including CEU credit information. When you are ready to attempt a course, click the “Launch” button. The course player window will appear on top of the page you were viewing, displaying the course content. You may stop viewing a course and resume at a later time. To resume a previously started course, launch it again from the My Training page, or just click on the “Launch” button for that course again. The course will start from the point where you left off.

9. In what format are courses presented?

Webinar-based courses: Most courses found on the Propane Training Academy are presented in an on-demand webinar format. After launching the course and entering your login information, the course will begin to play as a slideshow presentation with audio. You will not be able to skip or fast forward to slides within the course presentation that you have not already covered, however, you may go back to revisit slides that you have already viewed at any time. Most course webinars take approximately 45 minutes to complete. Once you have completed the webinar presentation, the web-based course exam will begin automatically.


PDF-based courses: Some courses found on the Propane Training Academy are presented in Portable Document Format (PDF) with no audio component. After launching the course and entering your login information, the course will open as a PDF in a new web page. You may read the course at your leisure and, when you’re ready, come back to the course launch page to take the web-based exam required for course completion.

10. Does every course have audio?

Most of the courses found on the Propane Training Academy have audio, but not all do. The audio will automatically begin when the course is launched. Be sure your speakers are on and the volume is turned up. If you still cannot hear the audio, be sure that you computer’s audio settings are not set to MUTE. As a last resort, you can always close and re-start the course

11. Tests and Quizzes: How do I take the test that follows a course? Why do some courses start with a quiz?

Course exams begin automatically after the course has been completed. After reading a print course or online PDF, members can come to the Propane Training Academy to complete the quiz.

12. How do I know if a course qualifies for HSW (Health Safety and Welfare) credit?

If a course qualifies for Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) credit it will include “Credits: 1 LU HSW” in the course listing.

13. How are my credits reported?

All credits are reported to the AIA/CES Records Office for AIA members. If you think you are missing a credit, please contact support at HWUniversity@hanleywood.com. If you are a member of another industry organization, such as NAHB, NARI, or are a LEED AP or Green Associate, you will have to self-report your completed credit per the requirements of each respective organization. Use the certificate of completion that’s generated at the end of a successful course completion as proof.

14. Does the Propane Training Academy report to my state licensing board?

Due to the different requirements of state licensing boards, we cannot report credits on your behalf. Keep your Certificates of Completion on file so that you can report your credits as required by your state or jurisdiction.

15. How are the courses scored?

An exam score of 80% or higher is considered a passing grade. If you do not score an 80%, you can re-take the exam as many times as you need to pass.

16. How can I see my “transcript” of all courses taken?

Once you’ve started a course, a record of the course will begin to appear on the My Training page. This page will reflect information pertaining to your course attempts and completions. This will include the Start Date, Completion Date, Score, and upon completion, a “Download” link for a certificate of completion.

17. How can I print a Certificate of Completion?

Once you’ve completed a course and passed its exam with a score of 80% of higher, the course will go to a completed status, and the completion date will appear on the My Training page. Upon completion, a “Download” link will become available on this page, where you may download your certificate of completion.

18. What are the suggested minimal system requirements?

Hanley Wood University will run best if your set-up meets the following minimum requirements:

  1. Broadband connection
  2. Adobe Flash Player 10+
  3. Windows XP or higher with latest updates installed
  4. Mac OS X 10.4 or higher
  5. Internet Explorer 8.0+
  6. Latest Versions of Firefox, Chrome, or Safari

19. How do I install the Adobe Flash Player?

If you don't have a Flash player installed or you have uninstalled the Flash player, download and install the latest Adobe Flash Player, which is available at the Adobe Flash Player Download Center.

20. How do I upgrade my Internet browsers?

If you’d like to upgrade your Internet browser, visit one of the following pages.

21. Why am I having problems viewing the screen?

The best way to open the courses is by using Internet Explorer 8.0 or higher or the latest versions of Firefox or Chrome, and a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher.
